Speech

The issue of Japan’s role in the United Nations has been a controversial one for many years. Some people believe that Japan should play a larger role in the United Nations. Other people believe that Japan should not. As for me, I think that Japan should not play a larger role in the United Nations for the following two reasons.
The first reason is that as it has been in chronic recession, Japan has difficulty making any contribution. Under the circumstances, I think Japan should solve its big domestic issues at first before taking any international action.
The second reason is that Japan cannot make a military contribution because of its constitution, which means that it is inevitable for Japan to retain the status quo. I think Japan should keep to its pacifist principles as a key section of the constitution, Article 9, renounces the right to maintain a military force and wage war. It cannot and should not contribute armed forces to the United Nations’ international peacekeeping efforts.
In conclusion, taking the fact that Japan has been suffering from the prolonged economic stagnation and Japan’s constitution bans any military action into consideration, Japan should sustain its position and should not play a larger role in the United Nations.
