TOPIC

Are we becoming more vulnerable to natural disasters?

Essay

I believe it depends on the locations. What I mean is that when it comes to developing countries, the people are becoming more vulnerable to natural disasters however as for developed countries the people are not.
A lot of research has shown that over 95 percent of deaths from natural disasters happen in developing countries while some research indicates that developed countries are more resistant to natural disasters. The primary reasons behind this are twofold.
The first primary reason is that buildings in developing countries have lower safety standards. Some data shows that 80 percent of deaths from natural disasters occur in the collapsing buildings. On the other hand, the construction technology has been developed and improved in developing countries. It is much safer to be in a new building than to be in an old one.
The second primary reason is that the lack of medical treatment kills people in developing countries while the medical treatment has advanced tremendously in developed countries.
In conclusion, for the aforementioned two reasons, I believe that in developing countries the people are becoming more vulnerable to natural disasters however in developed countries the people are becoming rather resistant to natural disasters.
