Should English be excluded from university entrance exams in Japan?

Essay

I don’t think English should be excluded from university entrance exams in Japan for the following two reasons.
The first reason is that it will discourage students from learning English. Many people study English hard to pass university entrance exams. But if English is excluded from university entrance exams, many students will study less than they used to and consequently it will deteriorate the standard of education.
The second reason is that the level of command of English can be a good criterion for college admission. Since students of both the humanities and science courses study English, English is surely a good criterion of scholastic ability. Furthermore the translation-oriented approach which is often seen in university entrance exams can provide an insight into both English and Japanese, thus enhancing students’ motivation for both English and Japanese study and broadening their cultural horizons.
As I mentioned, for the aforesaid two reasons, I don’t think English should be excluded from university entrance exams in Japan.
