Does sport contribute to international understanding?

Essay

◆ Pros
I strongly believe that sport does contribute to international understanding for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that there are many people who learn culture through traditional sport. For example, there are many western people who have started karate got interested in Japanese culture. Many Japanese football players have gone abroad and their fans get interested in the countries where the players went. In these cases, it is sport that makes people understand more about other countries.
The second reason is that international sports events attract tourists and as a result people learn about the culture and deepen the understanding of the hosting country. For instance, due to the Tokyo Olympics, many people came to Japan and got interested in the country and started learning about it. In these cases, sport makes people interested in other countries.
The third reason is that many famous athletes from different countries have deepened a friendship with each other even after they retire. I have seen many times when many famous athletes from different countries meet and talk on TV show, and hold charity events, and so on. In these cases, they unite through sport.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I strongly believe that sport does contribute to international understanding.

◆ Cons
I don’t believe that sport contributes to international understanding for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that sport makes people competitive. The sport match, especially a match between countries that do not get along well with each other, only aggravates the relations and never contributes to mutual understanding. There are actually many occasions when supporters of different countries started a fight and many people got injured and some were killed.
The second reason is that there have been so many wars in spite of the fact that sport has been always there. Sport had existed when the World War I and the World War II broke out. Sport could not stop them.
The third reason is that sports fans are just interested in the sport itself, not in the country and culture behind it. Many people are just attracted to the sport itself and few gets interested in the country of their favorite players, or the country and culture from which the origin of their favorite sport derives. Many people’s interest stops at sport itself and does not lead to their understanding of other countries.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I don’t believe that sport contributes to international understanding.
