Should brain dead patients be kept alive?

Essay

◆ Pros
I believe that brain dead patients should be kept alive for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that brain dead patients are still alive. Although they are in the state of vegetation, it does not mean that they are dead. They are still alive. Sunflowers are alive and amoebas are alive and so are brain dead patients. It is tantamount to murder to kill patients who are still alive.
The second reason is that the organs of brain dead patients can be used in order to save other lives. If the patients registered as donors and their organs can be used for saving other people, doctors should respect the patients’ will. Therefore brain dead patients should be kept alive until the suitable recipients of the organs are found.
The third reason is that brain dead patients may recover. There are cases in which people who had been thought to be brain dead recovered. There are still many things even the scientists and doctors do not understand about brain. As long as there is a possibility of recovery, doctors should not kill the patients.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I believe that brain dead patients should be kept alive.

◆ Cons
I believe that brain dead patients should not be kept alive for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that it is extremely inconsiderate to family members of the patients. The fact that their family member has become brain dead is devastating enough. So scientists’ suggestions to use them for organ transplant or medical research are nothing but cruel. Patients are not tools for scientists. Unless the patients expressed their will to be used for medical research or organ transplant, brain dead patients should not be kept alive.
The second reason is that people have the right to die with dignity. I know that some people think that euthanasia is a sin. However it is unreasonable to force their subjective concept of what is right or wrong on other people. If the patients ask for mercy-killing, doctors should respect the patients’ will.
The third reason is that the cost to keep brain dead patients alive can be used for other patients who can be saved. There are many other people who need medical treatment. It is not logical to use a lot of money to try to keep brain dead patients who will never recover alive instead of saving other patients who can recover.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I believe that brain dead patients should not be kept alive.
