Should martial arts be mandatory in school?

Essay

◆ Pros
I strongly believe that martial arts should be mandatory in school for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that children will be able to protect themselves. Considering that there have been many cases in which children were killed by adults, the importance of the ability to protect oneself is obvious. The victims might not have been killed if they had been taught martial arts in school. Martial arts are a great way to protect children from child abuse, domestic violence, rape, murder, and so forth.
The second reason is that martial arts help children to build up mental strength. Martial arts are not only for physical strength but for mental strength as well. Through martial arts, they can learn self-control, the importance of making efforts, how to face hardships bravely, and so on. As they get stronger physically, they cultivate confidence and a sense of independence.
The third reason is that martial arts are important traditions. This is not specific to martial arts. It is important to learn traditions from older generations and teach them to younger generations. In this way, tradition is handed down.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I strongly believe that martial arts should be mandatory in school.

◆ Cons
I do not think that martial arts should be mandatory in school for the two following reasons.
The first reason is that it can be more dangerous for children to dabble at martial arts. As the saying goes, “A little learning is a dangerous thing”, it may be safer not to learn martial arts at all than dabble at them. Martial arts are not something one can learn easily without much time. It is the opposite in fact. Becoming able to protect oneself is extremely time-consuming, and school education is not enough.
The second reason is that it is not good to force what one does not want on them. This is not specific to martial arts. Forcing something they do not want on children is the worst way of education. This is scientifically validated. Medical survey states that children lose creativity and the will to learn if they are forced to do something while children become more creative and study voluntarily when they have carte blanche to do anything they want.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned two reasons, I do not think that martial arts should be mandatory in school.
