The pros and cons of the merit system

◆ Pros
Although some people are against the merit system, I am for it for the two following reasons.
The first reason is that the merit system enhances employees’ morale. No matter how hard they work, if they are not evaluated fairly, it is inevitable that employees’ moral declines. However, if they are evaluated based on ability, they would put more effort into their work in order to make profit for company or improve their skills and consequently businesses will flourish and it will have a great impact on economy. This is a real benefit especially in this world economic recession.
The second reason is that the merit system can eliminate bureaucracy where people with no ability receive big salary and have strong influence just because they have connections or have stayed in the company longer while young people with high ability receive small salary and have only weak influence. This is the very cause of economic stagnation and the unfair gap between the rich and the poor. The bureaucrats’ exploitation of poor people and young workers is one of the worst things in the world and must be eradicated.
As I mentioned, for the two aforementioned reasons, I am for the merit system.

◆ Cons
Although some people are for the merit system, I am against it for the two following reasons.
The first reason is that company is responsible for fostering employees' ability. The merit system makes companies hire only people who already have ability. This is the companies’ evasion of responsibility to educate and train employees. Moreover, in the long run, this could be a serious loss because with education some workers would become competent business people who make a great profit for the company even if they are not capable now.
The second reason is that companies should evaluate loyalty and diligence of employees. Even if they are not that capable, employees with loyalty and diligence are trustworthy as human beings and these people are the ones who actually help the company when in trouble. As an old saying goes, “a friend in need is a friend indeed.” In the company’s crisis, people with ability but no loyalty will leave and get a new job at a different company. People with diligence make effort to improve their skills and could become much better workers than people with ability but no diligence.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned two reasons, I am against the merit system.
