Subtitles vs. Dubbing

Essay

◆ Subtitles
Although some people prefer dubbing, I much prefer subtitles for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that I want to enjoy the real lines instead of translated lines in another language. Moreover I just don’t like the way dubbing actors say the lines. They often overact and sound forced and unnatural. As far as I’m concerned, dubbing completely ruins the film.
The second reason is that I want to respect actors. It is disrespectful to dub the lines of real actors. This is not specific to cinema. There are a lot of TV interview videos that are dubbed. This is disrespectful to the people who speak. The speaker’s original voice should be respected.
The third reason is that subtitles help people who want to learn the language. It is one of the best ways to learn languages by watching movies in the language one wants to learn. Dubbing deprive people of the opportunity to learn languages. However, if there is no such a thing as dubbing, people would naturally get more interested in foreign languages and consequently the number of multilingual people will increase. This is a real benefit in this modern globalized world.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I much prefer subtitles.

◆ Dubbing
Although some people prefer subtitles, I much prefer dubbing for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that subtitles are often shortened and translated loosely so that people can catch up on. The speed people read is much slower than the speed people speak and hear. Therefore it is impossible to show all the exact original lines as subtitles. However dubbing can cover all the lines.
The second reason is that subtitles ruin the video. For example, if someone wrote the explanation and interpretation of Mona Lisa under the painting, it would completely ruin the painting. The same thing can be said about cinema. Subtitles ruin the video, especially the beautiful visual scenes. Dubbing is disrespectful to the visual art of film.
The third reason is that it is bothersome to read while watching movies. Cinema is not a book. It should consist of video and sound. Considering the fact I said earlier that the speed people read is much slower than the speed people speak and hear, although subtitles are shortened so that people can catch up on, they are still inconvenient to some people.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I much prefer subtitles.
