Should elderly people live in nursing homes?

Essay

◆ Pros
I strongly believe that elderly people should live in nursing homes for the four following reasons.
The first reason is that it prevents elderly people’s solitary death. Nowadays solitary death has been a serious social problem and the government is trying to solve this. Under the circumstances, nursing homes can be an effective solution.
The second reason is that it protects elderly people from crimes which target them. Now that a lot of elderly people have been victimized by fraud and scam cases. However, if they live in nursing homes, these crimes can be easily avoided.
The third reason is that it provides elderly people with community. This is really important since loneliness is a cause of many problems such as mental depression, kleptomania, and so on.
The fourth reason is that it will boost economy. In some countries, the number of elderly people has been increasing exponentially and the number of young people has been decreasing rapidly. Considering the situation, the prosperity of the industry for elderly people is a key to economic growth.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned four reasons, I strongly believe that elderly people should live in nursing homes.

◆ Cons
I do not believe that elderly people should live in nursing homes for the three following reasons.
The first reason is that elderly people have the right to choose where to live and how to die and whether to be taken care of or not. It is an encroachment of fundamental human rights to force people to do something which they do not want to. One has the freedom of living where one likes, the freedom of dying alone, the freedom of not being taken care of.
The second reason is that there is already serious lack of nurses. The shortage of workforce in nursing homes is a worldwide problem. Doctors and nurses have already overworked and it will aggravate the situation if more elderly people live in nursing homes.
The third reason is that it costs a lot of money. If elderly people should live in nursing homes, more facilities and workforce will be needed, and it costs a lot of money to construct the institutions and to train and hire doctors and nurses, and the government simply cannot afford to spend that kind money in this world economic situation.
As I mentioned, for the aforementioned three reasons, I do not believe that elderly people should live in nursing homes.
